Looking for pet-friendly bars and restaurants in the Charleston area? Well, it isn’t hard to find patio seating where the dog can sit under a table, wait for scraps, and be slowly bored to death.

But you can do better! If you’re looking for somewhere special to take the pooch, three pet-friendly establishments in Charleston and Mt. Pleasant offer both dog and human a little something extra.

Whether it’s cocktails, local brews, or a filling meal you’re after, these locations provide special perks for people who bring along their fur babies.

Fatty’s Beer Works Average Cost: $$ 1436 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29405 (843) 974-5330

Fatty’s Beer Works is a brewery offering, truly, some of the best beers in Charleston. From lights to darks, sours to stouts, there’s always plenty of variety on tap at Fatty’s. But one of the best things about this brewery is the fun, dog-friendly atmosphere.

Dogs are free to come inside and roam the grounds of this hand-painted warehouse with their owners, and there’s a big, grassy yard out front with plenty of room to play. Fatty’s hosts frequent events and live music, but Sundays are always Dog Day Sundays.

Every Sunday, from noon to 3pm, beer-lovers who bring their dogs receive $1 off their first drink. Now and then, Fatty’s Dog Days will have pizza catered by Rog Pizzeria and maybe some live music. You’ll find jam bands here, DJs, and everything in between, but your pup is always welcome.

Check upcoming events at Fatty’s Beer Works on their Facebook page at Facebook.com/FattysBeer.

Mainland Container Co. Average Cost: $$ 1528 Ben Sawyer Blvd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464 (843) 284-8174

Mainland Container Co., a casual gastropub serving low-country goodness in Mt. Pleasant, keeps their menu short but focused. The food here is a higher quality of pub fare, but brunch is where Mainland Container shines, and not just for human diners.

Dogs are welcome on Mainland’s patio, where you’ll be surrounded by live oaks and marshland. Have a seat at a quirky patio bar that’s actually made from a shipping container. Take in a live band, order from a special mimosa menu, and make your dog’s day with a few menu items created just for them.

Mainland’s doggy brunches consist of two meat dishes and peanut butter treats. Your pup can have chicken or beef, unseasoned and cooked fresh, and both meals include a treat on the side. These meals are just $6 apiece and extra treats cost only $1.

To find out about events and specials, visit Mainland Container online at Facebook.com/MainlandContainerCo.

The Shelter Kitchen + Bar Average Cost: $$ 202 Coleman Blvd, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464 (843) 388-3625

Located in Mt. Pleasant, The Shelter Kitchen + Bar makes our list of the best dog-friendly establishments simply because it’s such a welcoming place to bring the pooch. On a lovely patio surrounded by trees, the staff of dog-lovers at The Shelter always has a place for pets. The food and cocktails here are hard to beat too.

Many restaurants near Shem Creek offer casual pub fare, but The Shelter’s menu rises a bit above the rest. With fresh, locally sourced ingredients served in a charming dining room, and also one of the best brunches in the area, the dog shouldn’t have any trouble devouring your scraps.

Red’s Ice House Average Cost: $$ 98 Church St, Mt Pleasant, SC 29464 (843) 388-0003

The top doggy destination on our list is Red’s Ice House. Red’s is an old favorite bar and grill right on Shem Creek where you’ll find a boat dock, a crow’s nest patio, and plenty of outdoor seating with a water view. It’s a popular Mt. Pleasant fixture where people and dogs alike go to unwind and maybe take in a live band.

The people at Red’s go out of their way to make it a great place for pets. From 4pm to 7pm every Wednesday, dog owners and dog lovers get the run of the Red’s patio for a weekly Yappy Hour. Your pups can socialize while you take advantage of the drink specials and watch dolphins play in the creek (they’re frequent guests here).

Red’s also hosts themed holiday events where patrons are encouraged to dress their dogs in their festive best and enter to win contests. There’s a Christmas Yappy Hour every December, and for Halloween, there’s a Pet & Owner Masquerade with a costume contest. Dress up with your dog to win up to $250 cash!
